Thiopentone - Imp Points.


Barbiturate.

Ultrashort acting d/t rapid redistribution.

Causes fall in blood pressure due to vasodilation, may lead to reflex tachycardia.

Resp depression, laryngospasm, bronchospasm.

Anticonvulsant action - Agent of choice for neurosurgical procedures.

Agent of choice for Cerebral protection,decreases ICT,cerebral perfusion,oxygen consumption and Cerebral metabolic rate.

Poor analgesic. Produces hyperalgesia.
IV inj. Is Painful.

Poor muscle relaxant.
Mild muscular excitatory movement may occur.

Intra arterial injection:
causes thrombosis, vasospasms, ischemia,necrosis,gangrene of the limb.

First symptom- burning pain.
First sign - Blanching due to vasospasm.

Uses:
Anticonvulsant
Inducing agent in anesthesia
Medically induced coma.
Euthanasia.

Decreases IOP.
Phobia desensitization.

Contraindications:
Acute intermittent prophyria
Respiratory obstruction
Status asthmaticus.
Cardiovascular instability.

Preparation:
Yellow amorphous powder.
-6% anhydrous sodium carbonate is mixed for formulation of barbiturates as sodium salt + water/saline to produce 2.5% solution of thiopentol.
Given 3-5 mg/kg/day.
