Propofol -Imp points.
Contains a phenol ring with isopropyl group attached, 2,6 di-isopropylphenol.
Oil based containing soyabean oil,egg lecithin, glycerol.
Colour is milky white.
To be used within 6 hours of opening the vial, after that contamination of the solution occasionally leads to death.
To prevent contamination sodium edetate, sodium metabisulphite are added to the solution as antimicrobial agents.
Most commonly used intravenous anesthetic agent.
Used for induction as well as maintainence.
Cerebroprotective.
Decreases intraoccular pressure.
Causes fall in bp and bradycardia.
No muscle relaxant property
Has significant antiemetic and antipruritic action.
Decreases polymorphonuclear chemotaxis but not other functions.
Recovery from propofol is rapid even after proplonged infusion
suitable for day care surgeries.
Can be used for total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) along with fenatanyl.
Causes dose dependent myocardial depression.
Anesthetic of choice for intubation in ICU and for patients with malignant hyperthermia.
Metabolised in liver ,some part metabolised in lungs and excreated via kindneys too.
Causes pain on infusion, myoclonus, apnea, decreased blood pressure, and rarely thrombophlebitis.
Propofol infusion Syndrome.

- of choice for intubation.
- relieves pruritis in cholestasis and spinal opiates.
- no respiratory irritation.
- no effect on corticosteroid synthesis or alter normal response to ACTH stimulation.
- intraarterial injection or extravasation does not cause adverse reactions.
